drinking, climbing, socks and robots

I went bar hopping in North Beach in SF with Mike and Andrew last night. I don't remember the names of the bars but one of them is right next to City Lights Bookstore. (Mike, Andrew-- please comment) A grasshopper, a white russian and a night out with my old drinking buddies.

I miss going out with Mike and Andrew. I laughed my arse off.
Guess what Andrew is saying here.

Andrew promised to visit me if I knit him socks that he likes. I'm not interested in things conditional on whether or not people like my knitting. How can anyone possible not like something I've made them!?! So we revised. Andrew promised to trade me music and books for knitted items. Just to tease him, here are some pictures of the socks I made for Rupa.

A close up:

I hope, when Andrew moves, he chooses someplace cold enough to warrant wool things. If he decides to go to Boston or NY then I'll make him more than socks. (bribe? you betcha)

Getting up this morning was painful but I managed to roll out of bed and onto BART to go meet Craig for some climbing at Mission Cliffs in San Francisco. It seemed sacraligious to go to the rock gym when its sunny 60F and dry but Craig had to go to work this afternoon: a trip to Castle Rock didn't seem practical today.

I always lament the fact that I lived here for four years and never took advantage of all the climbing and good weather. I only started climbing two years ago, in Boston, and when I was here, I had no interest in it. Anyhow, Craig is in a similar boat. He only recently started climbing. A few years ago he lived in Yosemite for six months and didn't get on a single route.

Walking back to the BART station, I passed by what appeared to be a scrap metal yard. Lined up in neat rows according to size were these:

Does anyone have any idea what these are?

They remind me of Robbie the Robot from Lost in Space.

The bars were Tosca and Vesuvio- both North Beach institutions.

I believe the Robby Robot things are step down tranformers, i.e. pole pigs. They step down transmission line voltage (66-765kV) to 110V. How? Physics baby!

Hey Andrew, I disagree. I think they're robots. An army of robots. Ready to take over the city of San Francisco.
